My spot in the Gonerfest program this year

Check out my ad for the gonerfest program this year (above) then if you want, check out my gonerfest photos after I take them later this month.  The photo I used for the ad is of Thee Oh Sees and was taken at gonerfest 6 last year at the Hi Tone |[thee oh sees at gonerfest 6 photos on kandicook.com]|. This seemed to be a well-liked photo (I may be tooting my own horn here, but I was very proud to see this photo elsewhere on the internet: Their Bated Breath, Lemon Ice Forever, Maximum Rocknroll) plus Trip seemed to really like it… so… in it went.

I’m very excited about Gonerfest this year (it’s Sept 22-26, 2010) and am honored (and feeling much more confident) to be photographing the insanity once again.  With the lack of sleep and huge crowds it may be inevitable, but I swear I’m going to try really hard not to end up with the worst debilitating flu I’ve ever had like last year and end up blogging about how PTI makes me anxious.  I might even nerd out and take vitamins.  Maybe I should start now to build up my immune system.  Would that work?

The 4th of July (a new afghan, sparklers & an animation)

So, I started another granny square afghan a few weeks ago (on Independence day).  Well, sort-of.  I’m frogging an earlier almost-complete project to start on a new afghan.  The previous one just wasn’t turning out how I had envisioned it (honestly it just wasn’t cute enough!).  Unraveling…. zzzzziiiiiiiiiipp!  Weeee!

A few more photos from the 4th:

Above::  Sparklers!

Above::  Good old fashioned light painting.

Above:: My husband Trip and I dancing.

Above:: Good old fashioned homemade fireworks-bomb.

Above:: Self-portrait with sparkler.

…And speaking of homemade fireworks bombs… here’s a little stop-motion animation I made of my friend Robert and his “sparkler bomb”…

Camp Scissor

This past weekend was packed full of superfun (all one word) experiences from beginning to end.  But right now I’m going to tell you a little about my camping trip.  Well, we actually slept indoors- but there was a tent, sleeping bags, dinner cooked over a fire and s’mores… all the makings of a good camping trip.  There was also camera and sound gear, computers galore, lots of paper and lots of scissors… and little sleep.

Please enjoy these polaroids (well, technically “instaxes”) of our shenanigans [click for larger]:

1. Tent complete with “Camp Scissor” sign:

2. Roasting marshmallows for s’mores:

3. Look at all these scissors!  We had about 30 pair:

4. In the middle of making the Scissor Party stop-motion intro:

5. Immediately after waking up:

As  you may already know, I am a hardcore fan of stop motion animation.  I was so proud to work with my friend Juli on this awesome animation which will be used as an intro for the collaborative website ScissorParty.com!  Enjoy.  Happy Monday.

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day!

Tomorrow is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day!  I’ve only been going on and on about it all week month long.  <nerd alert> I am SO EXCITED about this. </nerd alert>.

I have an amazing Holga Pinhole camera that I received as a birthday gift last year, a handmade one from a friend that may or may not work, and am planning on building my own over the weekend with some friends.  Also planning on building a camera obscura- in your face!  This weekend is going to be a dream come true.

Some of my pinhole photography:: Sidewalk Pinhole (May 2009) and Gulf Pinholes (Summer 2009).  Does anybody have any WPPD plans?

The Supreme Genius of King Khan and His Sensational Shrines

Six cool things about King Khan:

1. I got a phone call earlier this week from a reporter at The Daily Helmsman (student newspaper at the University of Memphis) asking if I had any photos of King Khan for a story about King Khan and the Shrines playing at the Hi-Tone on Friday.  Check!

Here’s the photo they used:

It doesn’t matter what the publication or how big or small- there is something so completely awesome about seeing a photograph I’ve taken in print with “Kandi Cook” on the side of it.

2. My husband, Trip, got me this awesome tea towel from the show in Nashville the night before:

And this way cool poster (I think I’m going to have this framed):

3. Everyone at the King Khan and the Shrines show in Memphis on Friday got stamped with the stamp I made for the Hi Tone!

4. There are no words to describe the show.  It was non-stop overwhelming awesomeness from start to finish.  I actually considered not bringing my camera because I knew I wanted to be in the thick of things and dancedancedance… but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t, and I’m glad I did because at the end of the show one of the band members guitared my friend Brandi while our friends Juli and Jim strung along:

5. At the end of the night I got to meet and talk to King Khan himself!  I told him that the show he played at the Hi Tone last year was the reason I started taking my camera to shows!  He seemed flattered about that, thanked me and said I looked dazzling with my camera and kissed my hand.  It was so great to have the opportunity to tell him in person that he was the reason I started shooting shows.  Rock on.

6. The photos.  A new series now up on kandicook.com:: http://kandicook.com/2010/kingkhanandtheshrines04022010.htm.

What up

First of all- I can hardly wait for summertime.  I have some extraordinary activities and big projects planned for the middle of 2010.  Looking forward to it.  I feel like I’ve been really really busy the last few weeks with every day this week packed with things to do from start to finish.  Lots of good things going on.

MPM | Memphis Photography Meet up had our very first meet up of 2010 on March 20th.  We had a pretty small group this time around and only hit two locations, but it was still a ton of fun and I met a few new people and hopefully took some interesting photos.  Other recommendable good things I’ve enjoyed recently:  got to see the one and only Paul F Tomkins, went to the I love Memphis party- check out the blog!, went to Sivads of March at the Memphis Brooks Museum (it’s over now but join the Sivad facebook fan page!) and enjoyed seeing Reigning Sound perform last Saturday… if I got just one photo of Greg Cartwright in focus, I’ll be a happy girl.

In between, I’ve been working on this new blanket.  It’s coming along a lot faster than the first, at least that’s what it feels like.  So far I’m about 75% done with the making of the squares:

That middle color is supposed to be a dark purple plum color (kind of looks dark in the photo), and then I was thinking about using this chartreuse yarn for the fourth color- any opinions welcome.  Bordering everything in cream.

Going out of town tomorrow then have guests coming in town on Friday for KING KHAN AND THE SHRINES!   Oh so excited.
